ReGen 2025 Looking to Inspire Powering Waste Management with Renewable Energy

Australia’s transition to a clean waste sector is starting to gain real momentum and ReGen Expo 2025 is the platform to discover the latest innovations. With renewable energy now accounting for a record 35–39% of Australia’s electricity generation in 2023, including 16% from solar, the opportunity to power waste management sustainably has never been stronger.

Processing, sorting, and transforming waste is energy intensive, placing a significant burden on emissions targets and operational budgets. According to the 2024 Climate Change Authority’s Sector Pathways Review, decarbonising waste processes through electrification, fuel switching, and operational improvements will be critical to achieving Australia’s national emission goals.

In this context, integrating renewable energy into heavy-duty waste machinery appears as a practical and powerful first step. Offering waste operators a pathway to reduce emissions, boost efficiency, and lower long-term costs.

At ReGen Expo on 23–24 July at ICC Sydney, three exhibitors are displaying how their renewable-powered systems can help reshape the waste sector.

Caterpillar of Australia

Caterpillar is incorporating electric and hybrid powertrain options into its heavy machinery, ideal for waste sorting yards, composting facilities, and recycling depots. Their sustainability roadmap emphasises electrification and reduced emissions, aligning with a cleaner energy supply.

Komatsu

Komatsu Australia is rolling out low-carbon solutions, including electrified equipment, for use in resource recovery. Their sustainability goals include deploying energy-efficient machinery that supports both municipal and commercial operations, reducing carbon footprints and fuel costs.

BMH Technology

Renowned for converting residual waste into Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF), BMH is also exploring coupling energy-recovery with renewables. Their technology diverts hard-to-recycle waste from landfill into industrial-scale fuel, aligning with emerging waste-to-energy models at municipal facilities.

These technologies matter now more than ever. With renewable energy contributing up to 39% of Australia’s electricity generation, the opportunity to power waste operations more cleanly and efficiently is within reach. Electrified machinery and solid recovered fuel (SRF) systems offer a way to move beyond diesel and landfill gas, significantly reducing both emissions and operational costs. By combining electrified infrastructure with renewable-generated fuel, the above exhibitors at ReGen are equipping local governments and industry with the practical tools needed to meet both climate and waste reduction targets.

As renewable energy reaches record highs and pressure increases for cleaner, more efficient operations, ReGen Expo 2025 (23–24 July, ICC Sydney) offers a platform connect directly with Australia’s ESG professionals, government representatives, corporate sustainability leaders, and specialists in resource recovery, recycling, and residuals management.

Together, they’ll reimagine waste as a resource and accelerate Australia’s shift toward a cleaner, more sustainable future. Register free for ReGen Expo Australia today here.
